The Moron Rooster
Their history is bound to the persistence of a cultural tradition that Inca its roots, probably, in the symbol of the Moron of the Frontier in Spain that mentions to an Alcalde tyrant that abused of the people, this it was revealed and to blows of lashes it expelled him of the town. Starting from this moment it became popular the proverb that says: It was "as the Rooster of Moron, without feathers and cackling"
Fastened in the popular feeling it is not until the decade of the 50 that Dr Benito Llanes Recino, journalist, lawyer, professor and historian of the city proposes the idea of erecting a monument to the rooster, however the first visual image of that symbol that from a lot he lived among the masses and that it already identified to the town in the whole country, it arrived manipulated by the time politicians, provoking indignation among the moroneros.
Such it was the case of the inauguration from the work sculptural identificativa to which attended the then president of the Republic of Cuba Fulgencio Batista and Saldiva, accompanied by their wife Martha Fernández. And other personeros of the corrupt régime.
Some mounts after the Revolutionary Victory, the Rooster was destroyed by some individuals that erroneously identified it with the satrap and what he represented. The town didn't conform to and it continued insisting in the reinstatement of its local yearned symbol.
This way, May of 1982, 2 with Armando's Hart Dávalos presence, Secretary of Culture, the moroneros receives the new Rooster, a sculpture of the outstanding sculptress's brass Rita Longa and Armando's artistic collaboration Alonso. The work takes an in agreement message with the characteristics of the residents: a rooster of it peels with their sharp spurs and you list to enter in combat. The monument has an amplification device that expands for the city the typical song of the animal at certain hours of the day, element that cooperates to the establishment of the local identity.
